If you are relying on your English test to boost your migration points, then pay close attention as the rules have just changed. From 7 August 2025, the Australian Government has introduced a significant update to PTE English language requirements.
A score of 79 in each section - including listening, reading, writing, and speaking is no longer sufficient to claim the full 20 points for Superior English. Plus, a new PTE Academic test format will also be officially effective from 7 August 2025.
🆕 New PTE Academic Score Updates
Here is the updated PTE score requirement across all English proficiency levels:
Test Sub-skill | Superior English | Proficient English | Competent English |
---|---|---|---|
🎧 Listening | 69 | 58 | 47 |
📖 Reading | 70 | 59 | 48 |
✍️ Writing | 85 | 69 | 51 |
🗣️ Speaking | 88 | 76 | 54 |
What Does This Change Mean for Skilled Visa Applicants?
This update means that applicants who were previously eligible to claim 20 points with a score of 79 in each PTE section will now need to meet the new, higher thresholds in writing and speaking. So, especially if you are aiming to be eligible for the Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent Visa), Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated Visa), or Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional Visa) through PTE, then target to get the updated score and keep the new exam format in mind to claim your 20 points for Superior English in your visa application.
