As of 12 September 2025, the Australian Department of Home Affairs has announced an important update to the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa program. This means graduates who have studied and lived in Hobart or surrounding postcodes are now eligible for a two-year Second Post-Higher Education Work (PHEW) stream visa, and it doubles the previous one-year visa allowance.

What’s Changing?

Previously, graduates qualifying for the Second PHEW visa using Hobart postcodes could only obtain a one-year Temporary Graduate Visa (TGV). But now onwards, all eligible higher education graduates from Tasmania’s capital and nearby regions can receive an additional two-year Second Subclass 485 visa.

The eligible Hobart postcodes include: 7000, 7004 to 7026, 7030 to 7109, 7140 to 7151, and 7170 to 7177.

What This Means for Hobart Graduates

This change gives Hobart graduates more time to stay, work, and build their future in Australia. With a two-year Second Post-Higher Education Work visa now available, international students have a better chance to gain local experience and explore long-term visa options.

In summary, this two-year visa extension doubles the time Hobart graduates can get to work and plan their future in Australia. This gives a great opportunity to gain valuable experience and plan a future with confidence in Hobart.
